About the University

The Jagiellonian University (JU) is the oldest university in Poland and one of the oldest in Europe. It is also among the largest Polish academic institutions, bringing together tens of thousands of students and several thousand academic teachers. Since its foundation in 1364, JU has always been an international university, welcoming students and scholars from all over the world. This tradition continues today through mobility programmes, bilateral exchanges, international cooperation networks and many other initiatives. While rooted in centuries-old academic tradition, JU is first and foremost a forward-looking institution. With a dynamic structure comprising specialised faculties and modern campuses, JU continues to expand its facilities, technologies, and research capacities to meet the challenges of today’s academic and scientific world.

Consistently ranked among the top universities in both national and international league tables, and cooperating with leading academic and scientific institutions worldwide, JU successfully combines high-quality education with world-class research — from astrophysics to cardiac surgery. The work and achievements of JU researchers are widely recognised internationally, as evidenced by the growing number of research grants and patents granted to the academic staff members.

In 2018, the International Visitors’ Office was established as a point of contact for internationally mobile researchers, their families and JU units. The IVO team provides information and support on all matters related to relocation — from residence formalities to useful tips on everyday life.
